Treston Holmes

IMG_3447 (1)

Treston Holmes is based at Kenley where you can see him at work in his studio. His art, on constant display in the gallery, is thrown on the wheel although this is not exclusive. Some pieces are high-fired to stoneware temperatures, glazed with matt and semi-matt surfaces or decorated with coloured slips and oxides. Effects are often achieved with multiple firings. Other work is coated with layers of fine liquid clay, which is then burnished at the leather-hard stage. These pieces are fired at a much lower temperature and treated with a smoked firing, achieving a leather- or wood-like surface with carbonisation marks redolent of Neolithic pit-fired pottery.

Forms are influenced by a number of cultures, present and past, as well as other potters’ work. Mediterranean cultures, such as the Greek, Roman, Phoenician and Sumerian, inform some of the pieces. African and some South American including Pre-Columbian design can be seen reflected in shape and form. More contemporary potters, such as Hans Coper and Lucy Rie, have also been an influence.

Treston Holmes works in partnership with his daughter Fiona Holmes. Treston Holmes works with students who are looking to learn more advanced techniques. These may include throwing, glazing, or hand-building.
